Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking official stated the incident rendered him speechless and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
